The charming village of Blue Mountain is set for its annual transformation into a film buff haven from May 30 to June 2. From canine companions and street-smart strays to horse whisperers and penguin pals, animals are taking centre screen at the 2025 Blue Mountain Film + Media Festival (BMFM).
Whether you’re a devoted dog lover, feline fan, or fascinated by animals on the big screen, this year’s lineup offers you a heartwarming mix of four-legged tales and wild storytelling.
Here’s your Canine Culture cheat sheet to the animal-centric films you won’t want to miss:
Best in Show
Directed by Christopher Guest (USA) — Free Outdoor Screening
Break out the biscuits! This cult-classic 2000 mockumentary is still the gold standard for anyone who’s ever brushed a dog for competition. Featuring neurotic pet parents, quirky judges, and plenty of poofy pups, this outdoor screening is a must for dog lovers. And it’s totally free!
Black Dog
Directed by Guan Hu (China) — Cannes Winner
A poignant story of two strays who bond in China’s shifting urban landscape, this award-winning film isn’t just about dogs—it’s about survival, change, and unlikely friendship. Expect a tearjerker with plenty of soul.
The Friend
Directed by Scott McGehee & David Siegel (USA) — Gala Screening
Bill Murray + Naomi Watts + a Great Dane named Bing = cinematic magic. This feel-good feature shows just how deeply a dog can shape our relationships, our grief, and our joy. Plus, you’ll want to stay for the after-party.
The Cowboy and the Queen
Directed by Andrea Nevins (USA)
It’s a tale as regal as it is rugged. This film offers a tender look at the bond between a horse trainer and Queen Elizabeth II. Think Royal Family meets rural wisdom—and yes, there are myriad equines fit for a queen.
The Penguin Lessons
Directed by Peter Cattaneo (USA/Spain)
Based on a true story, this charming dramedy follows an uptight English teacher (Steve Coogan) who reluctantly befriends an actual penguin. Set in 1970s Argentina, it’s the feel-good flick you didn’t know you needed.
Flow (Private School Program Screening)
Directed by Gints Zilbalodis (Latvia) — Oscar Winner
Cats, capybaras, and dogs survive a great flood in this stunning animated feature. While not open to the general public, we hope this mesmerizing tale makes its way to wider audiences post-festival.
Animal stories are human stories. Festival director Jason Gorber summed it up perfectly: “From dog dramas to delightful documentaries, horse movies to sci-fi classics… there’s something for any movie lover to experience!”
Animal-centric films offer more than just cuteness—they give us windows into loyalty, survival, love, and connection. For those who cherish the human-animal bond, these films promise emotion, humour, and heartfelt moments that linger after the credits roll.
