What is Animal Reiki?
By Amy Tokic
Animal Reiki for dogs is a gentle, non-invasive healing technique that harnesses universal life energy to promote overall wellness. This holistic approach supports dogs’ physical health, emotional balance, and behavioral stability. By channeling healing energy, Reiki can help alleviate stress and anxiety in dogs, provide relief from discomfort, and support the natural healing process during recovery from illness or injury.
Practitioners typically place their hands lightly on or just above the dog’s body, allowing the animal to accept the energy according to their own comfort level. Animal Reiki works well as a complementary therapy alongside traditional veterinary treatments.
Becoming a Reiki Practitioner can be attained through a process called Reiki attunement. During this ceremony, a Reiki Master channels energies into the student, enabling them to become a conduit for Reiki energy themselves.
By placing hands on specific areas of the body, practitioners can direct Reiki energy to target particular regions that need healing.
Reiki functions as intuitive energy that works autonomously, flowing precisely where healing is required. It can traverse vast distances globally or smaller spaces within a room.
This remarkable energy can even transcend time, addressing past traumas or facilitating future endeavors by clearing energetic pathways.
One of Reiki’s most beneficial qualities is its self-regulating nature. There’s no risk of energy overdose or harmful effects. For canine companions, Reiki serves as a natural wellness enhancement, similar to essential nutrients provided through daily supplements.

Five Reiki techniques you can do at home
Here are five gentle touch techniques you can use with your dog, even without Reiki training. These approaches are organized into methods for promoting relaxation and supporting emotional healing.
Even though you aren’t channeling formal Reiki energy, simply placing your hands on your dog with mindful intention can provide comfort and reassurance.
Proper hand position for dog touch therapy: Place your hands flat with palms facing downward. Keep your fingers and thumbs straight and together. Maintain this hand position whenever you touch your dog during these exercises.
Techniques for general relaxation
These calming touch techniques begin at your dog’s neck region and methodically progress downward, concluding at the tail base. Each position should be maintained for several minutes while you breathe deeply, transferring your calm energy to your canine companion.
1. Shoulders
Position your hands next to each other on your dog’s shoulder area. If your dog is lying down, you may place both hands on the same side. For sitting or standing dogs, place your hands above each shoulder blade from behind.
2. Midsection
For a dog lying down, place your hands side-by-side on the belly region. If your dog is sitting or standing, position your hands in the middle of the back, with one hand on each side of the spine.
3. Lower back area
Position your hands near your dog’s tail base. Keep them side-by-side for dogs lying on their side, or place them on either side of the spine for sitting or standing dogs.
Techniques for emotional healing
The following hand positions can be effective for emotional healing and balancing energy in your dog.
4. Back and chest position
To perform this healing technique, gently place one hand on your dog’s back between the shoulder blades while simultaneously positioning your other hand on their chest.
5. Head and chest position
This calming position involves placing one hand softly on your dog’s head while resting your other hand on their chest area.
The effects of a Reiki session on your dog might not be immediately visible, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t effective. Often, subtle internal changes are taking place that aren’t readily apparent but will become noticeable over time.
Ultimately, any regular practice that allows you to spend quiet, intentional time connecting with your dog—whether through Reiki energy work, gentle massage, or simply a consistent morning embrace—creates valuable bonding opportunities that benefit both of you.
