ArmOR Hand Procedure Protective Glove

Dr. Laura Catena DVM, a Pittsburgh-based veterinarian, created a style of gloves to give animal handlers and caregivers additional protection against bites, scratches and the transmission of zoonotic diseases.                                                                                         “Being a vet is one of the top ten most dangerous jobs, and I can attest to that after suffering bites from a patient and the resulting infection that required extensive surgery and physical therapy to regain proper function of my hand,” says Dr. Catena.  “After that experience, I decided to develop a safe and effective glove that allows for proper animal restraint technique through the superior flexibility and dexterity the gloves provided.

We were given the ‘Procedure Palpation Gloves’ to review for Canine Culture®. The ArmOR Hand gloves are intended for professional use for animal caregivers, zookeepers, wildlife rehabbers, groomers and such.  In a non-veterinary way, I wore them in a garden environment, testing for flexibility.   No animals were handled in this test.

Two styles are available: The Original Animal Handling Glove which offers complete hand and arm coverage protection against animal-related injuries, and with rubber fingertips for proper animal restraint.  The second style: The Procedure Palpation Glove has three fingers exposed–allowing for detailed administration such as vaccines, blood draws, etc.

I found the ArmOR Hand (size m) gloves, to be comfortable, not bulky and a good fit. With three fingers exposed, they enabling me to trim with ease, and safely handle thorny branches without getting pricked. Dexterity is important when handling animals safely – or in my case, a Barberry bush.

ArmOr Protector Glove are made with premium synthetic materials, including high-tensile strength Kevlar® and stretch Cordura®  The gloves are machine washable and can be wiped down to help prevent zoonotic and infectious disease transmission.  Sure, there are other animal-handler gloves on the market which cost less.

The adage, “you get what you pay for,” rings true. ArmOr Protector Gloves are comparable in terms of quality, and enhanced protection against bites, scratches, and, in my case nasty thorns.
